DIY Tax Prep

Start with the IRS

The IRS is not the bad guy. They offer options to do your taxes yourself for free.

Income under $73k?

Use free software

If your adjusted gross income is under $73,000, you can use a software from providers like TurboTax, TaxAct, TaxSlayer, etc.

But watch out for fees. Some of these software options only include certain forms for federal taxes, and they are only required to provide federal filing for free. This means that they can charge you extra to file state and local taxes.

Income over $73k?

Get comfortable with the forms

If your AGI is over $73,000, you do not qualify to use the free software, but you can still complete your taxes for free using the IRS Free File Fillable Forms. This process requires you to complete the forms by hand, similar to a fillable PDF, but online.

Free File Fillable Forms is only for federal taxes.
